As the young stars in Hollywood struggle with nude pictures and drug scandals, it is the over-60 crowd who know exactly how to stay on top of the A-list.

During this year’s Academy Awards, four of the actors nominated in their respective categories were over the age of 60. Judi Dench was nominated at 79 for Best Actress in “Philomena,” Meryl Streep was nominated at 64 for Best Actress in “August: Osage County,” June Squibb was nominated at 84 for Best Supporting Actress in “Nebraska,” and Bruce Dern was nominated at 77 for Best Actor in “Nebraska.”

While none of those actors won the Academy Award, it shows how relevant these actors are at this point in their life. Over the years, they have become familiar faces and people go to see their films because they have watched them for so long.

“Julie Andrews is one of my favorite actresses. She was my favorite as a child in all of her musicals. She was such an inspiration,” said Andrea Schwarzkopf, senior. “She came back in her older age to do ‘Princess Diaries’ and is still beautiful.”

After becoming one of America’s favorite leading ladies in the 1960s with “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music,” Andrews’ career suffered from some disappointing movie roles in the 1980s and 1990s. Her career  was revived in the early 2000s with her role in “The Princess Diaries” and voice roles in the “Shrek” films and “Despicable Me.” Andrews is not the only one to have career revival later in life.

Between her roles in the “Harry Potter” films and on “Downton Abbey,” Maggie Smith is earning some of the greatest recognition of her career at 79 years old.

At the prime age of 92, Betty White has been experiencing great success in films, such as “The Proposal” and “You Again,” and her television show, “Hot in Cleveland.”

Liam Neeson has said that he has become more popular as an action star at 62 than he ever was, thanks to films like “Taken” and “Non-Stop.”

“Like Meryl Streep is for women in Hollywood, Liam Neeson is showing men in Hollywood that just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you’re career is slowing down,” said Meghan Studer, graduate student. “He has made more money off his recent action movies than he ever did when he was younger.”

Other actors have had continually successful careers. Meryl Streep is possibly Hollywood’s most respected actress at age 65 and has a record-breaking 18 Academy Award nominations. With three more films coming out soon, Streep is showing no signs of slowing down.

“[I love Meryl Streep] because of her versatility and poise,” said Ale Berrio, senior. “She shows dedication and strength in her characters and she takes her roles, no matter how horrible they are, seriously.”

Already being Academy Award winners, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are two of Hollywood’s most sought out actors. The pair has co-starred in four movies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy and “Now You See Me,” in the past ten years. Two of those four films have grossed more the $1 billion.

Do not think that growing older is slowing down any of these actors.

“It’s the rudest word in my dictionary, ‘retire,’” said Dench. “And ‘old’ is another one. I don’t allow that in my house. And being called ‘vintage.’ I don’t want any of those old words.”

Even though the world has been watching these actors for years, it seems that they will be making more films for years to come.
